GM chairman Bob Lutz said this week that the popular Cadillac Converj concept will not be built. The Converj was set to be a luxury coupe built using the Chevy Volt’s hybrid technology. The Converj was popular at auto shows and had positive feedback online. Despite the public support of the Converj, which prominently featured Cadillac’s signature cow catcher grill, GM has decided not to go forward with a production version.
Lutz confirmed the Converj’s cancellation via text message to Automotive News, saying, “Simply, other priorities and the conviction that the Volt and Ampera will use all available capacity for years to come,” according to Left Lane News.
GM had already announced that the Converj would be built, and now has changed its mind. Price would have been an issue with the Converj’s viability. The Chevy Volt will probably cost about $40,000, and the added price of the Cadillac’s premium appointments would put the price for a Converj well above that of the CTS sport sedan. It would be hard to convince luxury buyers standing in a Cadillac dealership to seriously consider paying extra for a slower, smaller car, no matter how much they love the cow catcher look.
