GM has issued a press release saying that it will discontinue the Hummer brand. Hummer was set to be sold to Chinese company Sichuan Tengzhong Heavy Industrial Machines Co., but since that deal wasn’t able to be completed, Hummer will be closed.
GM’s press release says that the company will be working with dealers and suppliers to conduct an orderly wind-down of Hummer, but does not give a time frame for the closing.
“One year ago, General Motors announced that we were going to divest HUMMER, as part of focusing our efforts on Chevrolet, Buick, GMC and Cadillac going forward. We have since considered a number of possibilities for HUMMER along the way, and we are disappointed that the deal with Tengzhong could not be completed,” John Smith, GM vice president of corporate planning and alliances, said in the release.
