Chrysler has announced that the Fiat 500 will go on sale in the United States before the end of 2010, according to Motorauthority. The 2011 Fiat 500 will be the first Fiat car to hit the U.S. since the company bought a large stake in Chrysler. The 500’s success will likely determine how many Fiat and Alfa Romeo vehicles are sold in the U.S. in the coming years.
The U.S. version of the 2011 Fiat 500 will come in four different styles. The standard three-door hatchback will be the base model. The 500 will also be available in convertible, five-door wagon and sporty Abarth styles. Pricing has not yet been announced, but since the Fiat 500 is designed to compete with the MINI Cooper, the 500 line will probably be priced near or below its German competitor.
The Fiat 500 Abarth will be the flagship of the 500 line. With 135-horsepower from its turbocharged engine, the Fiate 500 Abarth will be powerful enough to be entertaining, given its small size. The Abarth’s 135-hp doesn’t sound like much, but the similarly sized Smart Fortwo only has 70-hp, so 135-hp will make the 500 scoot around pretty quickly.
