Honda has announced that it is recalling an additional 378,758 cars from the 2001 and 2002 model years to replace the driver’s side airbag inflator. The airbag recall was originally announced last July and included 440,000 vehicles. After the issue continued on cars that weren’t included in the original recall, Honda decided to expand the scope to nearly one million cars.
Apparently, the Airbag inflator on the affected cars causes the airbag to deploy with too much force and can cause the inflator casing to rupture. If the inflator casing ruptures, metal fragments could shoot through the airbag’s cushion and hit the driver. At least one person has died as a result of the airbag malfunction, according to Honda’s news release.
The recall includes certain 2001 and 2002 Honda Accord, Civic, Odyssey, CR-V and Pilot vehicles, as well as some 2002 Acura CL and TL models. Honda’s news release encourages any owners who believe their car may be affected to visit http://owners.honda.com/recalls or call (800) 999-1009. Acura owners should go to http://owners.acura.com/recalls or call (800) 382-2238. If your car is affected by the recall, take it to a local Honda dealer as soon as possible, but don’t rush, your airbag isn’t working properly.
