Ford has announced that the 2011 Mustang Shelby GT500 will receive several upgrades to make it faster, better handling, more efficient and cheaper than the 2010 model. The most important upgrade on the 2010 Shelby GT500 is the introduction of an aluminum engine block replacing the current model’s iron one, according to Autoblog.
The 2011 Mustang Shelby GT500’s aluminum engine, which adds 10-horsepower to bring the car’s total to 550, weighs 125 lbs less than the existing engine. That weight loss allows the 2011 Shelby GT500 to accelerate and corner better, while getting better gas mileage. The 2010 Shelby GT500’s gas mileage was just low enough to qualify the Mustang for a $1,000 gas guzzler tax. The 2011 model will get 15 mpg city and 23 mpg highway, and avoids the tax.
The 2011 Mustang Shelby GT500 will also receive suspension modifications and wheels 15-lbs lighter than the outgoing model’s, designed to improve the car’s handling. Ford engineers told Autoblog that around one road course, the 2011 GT500 was three seconds faster than the 2010 model.
The bottom line is that if you’re in the market for a high-end sports car and considering the Mustang Shelby GT500, it’s well worth your time to wait until the 2011 model is available.
