Toyota has announced that replacement gas pedals for its recalled cars have begun shipping to dealers, according to Autoblog. The solution to the stuck pedal recall still needs to be approved by the NHTSA before it can be implemented. Toyota has not said when dealers will be equipped to replace the pedals on customer cars.
About 4.2 million Toyota vehicles worldwide are equipped with accelerator pedals that can reportedly become stuck, causing unintended and unstoppable acceleration. The problem gained nationwide notoriety when a family was killed in an accident that may have been caused by a stuck accelerator.
Toyota was forced to stop selling any vehicle that may be equipped with the problematic accelerator pedal, so dealer lots are filled with RAV4, Corolla, Matrix, Camry, Avalon, Tundra and Sequoia models that cannot legally be sold. Toyota is waiting for the NHTSA to approve its proposed solution to the problem before it can begin repairing the affected vehicles and sell them again.
