Indian auto company Mahindra & Mahindra named the United States as its top target for the future, and plans to launch its Scorpio SUV here before 2010 ends. Mahindra has already approved 300 dealers to form a network for selling its Scorpio SUV as well as the similar pickup truck in America, according to Inside Line.
Mahindra’s Pawan Goenka also said that if sales in America are good, the company will look into manufacturing its vehicles here, a move that would pay huge dividends in PR while many Americans are upset about global outsourcing. Goenka also said that the company will stick to SUVs and trucks, and has no plans to sell cars.
What separates Mahindra’s small pickups and the Scorpio SUV from the crowd that has grown in that segment lately is that they are powered by diesel engines. With the high gas mileage and torque numbers that usually come with a diesel engine, the Mahindra Scorpio will carve out a niche in the market when it does go on sale in the U.S. The big question is if people will be willing to buy a noisy diesel that can’t be filled up at every gas station from an Indian carmaker with no reputation.
