MINI will show off a concept called the Beachcomber next month at the Detroit Auto Show. The MINI Beachcomber concept is a modern take on the doorless Mini Moke of the 1960s. While it’s hard to imagine an SUV without doors selling today, the Beachcomber will provide insight into what a MINI SUV would look like.
Rumours of an upcoming MINI SUV have been circulating for some time. The SUV would supposedly be based on the current MINI but be taller and have optional all-wheel drive. A MINI SUV would compete with the Honda CRV, Toyota RAV4 and Ford Escape in the small SUV segment, and with such bland competition, it’s hard to imagine a stylish MINI selling poorly.
Like the Moke of the 1960s, the MINI Beachcomber isn’t designed for rock crawling or dune jumping, it’s more of a cruiser that can get you to remote surfing spots or on-beach bonfires. Because of that, the concept doesn’t feature giant wheels, a super-flexible suspension or a giant engine. It does however feature seats that look like they could sit through a rain storm and not be ruined forever.
The MINI Beachcomber concept features MINI’s trademark center mounted speedometer, a collection of loudspeakers (for beach parties) and a removable soft top, according to Motorauthority.
