In-car navigation systems are the best new technology to hit the passenger vehicle market in years. The only problem with built-in navigation systems is that they are often so expensive ($1,000-$2,000) that they cost much more than they’re actually worth. When you’re talking about thousands of dollars, the “a map only costs $2” argument becomes very valid. That’s all going to change soon though. Nissan is planning to offer a built-in navigation system as a $400 option on some of its small cars, according to The Detroit News.
The $400 navigation system includes a 5-inch touch screen with built-in Bluetooth connectivity and a USB port for music devices. The system will also feature built-in integration with XM radio, XM satellite and a backup camera. Nissan’s system will be able to suggest the most economical route for drivers and even change their route to avoid traffic jams.
The Detroit News says that Nissan will be offering the $400 navigation system on low-price, high-volume cars. The car tested was a Sentra, so it’s a safe bet that future Sentra models will have the option. Expect the Versa and the Cube to be available with the system too. The only question that remains is whether the Altima will be available with this system. The $1,780 technology package that is required for navigation on the Altima may be too lucrative for Nissan to give up.
