Toyota has issued a recall on all 110,000 Tundras from model year 2000 through 2003 sold in cold weather states for potential undercarriage rust. If the truck sees a lot of road salt, the frame rear cross member could rust and the spare tire mounted there can eventually detach. In extreme cases, the rust problem could make the rear brakes inoperable.
Owners of 2000 through 2003 Tundras in cold states will receive a letter from Toyota asking them to bring their vehicle in to a dealership for inspection. If the crossmember is found to be fine, it will be treated with an anti-corrosion compound. If the crossmember is rusted significantly, the dealership will replace it. Toyota recommends that owners remove their spare tires before the service in order to minimize the chances of an accident.
When you’re buying a car or truck, it’s tempting to go with what you think is the safe choice, especially in rough economic times. You should remember though that even a company like Toyota, with its rock solid dependability reputation, has issues with its vehicles from time to time. You should always shop around for a car, even if you have your heart set on the reliable Toyota, otherwise you could miss a great deal and regret it later.
