Toyota officially revealed the FT-86 concept at the 2009 Tokyo Auto Show, but Subaru has remained secretive about its version of the joint venture car. Edmunds claims that the Subaru car will have 250-horsepower, all-wheel drive and a longer wheelbase than the Toyota FT-86. The FT-86 will get 200-hp and rear-wheel drive. The Subaru is expected to cost about $30,000, compared to the Toyota FT-86 ‘s expected price of about $25,000.
Toyota and Subaru teamed up to reduce the costs on their new sports cars. Subaru provided the 2.0 liter horizontally-opposed four-cylinder engine and the chassis, and will build both cars.
The price difference between the two cars makes sense, since the companies would naturally want to avoid competition between their jointly produced cars. At $25,000, the Toyota FT-86 will be competing with the Hyundai Genesis coupe, as well as the V6 versions of the Ford Mustang, Chevy Camaro and Dodge Challenger. The Subaru has much stiffer competition. At $30,000, there are too many sports cars to list, but the main competition will come from the Nissan 370Z and Mazda RX-8.
What’s strange is that if Edmunds is right about the Subaru’s details, it will be priced to compete with the Subaru Impreza STI, which will have 50 more horsepower. So then the question will be whether or not sports car buyers are willing to give up a substantial amount of horsepower for a stylish coupe body style.
