Renault-Nissan’s CEO Carlos Ghosn announced that the company plans to build the world’s cheapest car. Renault-Nissan plans to build a car that will sell for less than the Tata Nano’s $2,500 MSRP. The car will be built for Nissan-Renault by Indian scooter and rickshaw maker Bajaj, according to Autoblog. Neither company has ever built a car in this price range before, so Ghosn said that he expects delays but hopes that the car will be on Indian roads by 2011.
Ghosn said Nissan-Renault also plans to export the car, which hasn’t been named yet, to other countries. The Tata Nano is selling as many cars as the company can build right now, so don’t expect to see these ultra low-cost cars for sale in any other countries soon.
Nissan-Renault isn’t the only big name carmaker that wants to carve out a piece of the growing Indian car market. Toyota and GM have also said that they are interested in producing low-priced cars for India.
“I don’t want Renault and Nissan to be makers of very pretty cars that people dream about but cannot afford,” Ghosn said.
Nissan made headlines recently when it announced that it would be selling America’s cheapest car with the Nissan Versa sedan base model, which doesn’t come with a radio or air conditioning. Shortly afterward, the Versa was undercut by the Hyundai Accent.
