Toyota has finally revealed its FT-86 sports coupe. Toyota hasn’t had a sporty coupe since the Celica was discontinued, and the FT-86 will fill its shoes as well as appeal to more hardcore car fans, thanks to a possible rear wheel-drive layout and turbocharged engine.
The FT-86 is supposedly the child of an affair between Subaru and Toyota, so while nothing has been officially announced about the FT-86’s power train, rumors abound. The gossip that has been most widely circulated says that the FT-86 will be powered by the 2.0 liter four-cylinder turbocharged boxer engine currently found in the Subaru Impreza WRX. The rumors also say that the FT-86 will be rear wheel drive and as light as possible, according to Autoblog.
If the FT-86 name sounds familiar to you, it’s because Toyota rocked the world with a Corolla in the mid 80s called the AE86. At the time, the tiny four-cylinder hatchback was able to keep up with the big-name sports cars of the time like the Chevy Camaro and Nissan 300ZX in a straight line and positively embarrass them in the turns, thanks to its bulimic weight. If Toyota can repeat that kind of accomplishment with the new FT-86, while meeting U.S. safety standards, they’ll have a winner on their hands for sure.
