With Pontiac closed, many car enthusiasts have been mourning the loss of the Solstice roadster and coupe. Without the Pontiac Solstice and its twin, the Saturn Sky, the only car left in the low-priced roadster category is the Mazda Miata MX-5. That could change soon though. According to Jalopnik, the Delorean Motor Company may produce its own version of the Solstice with unique styling.
James Espy, vice president of the Delorean Motor Company, pointed out that before he started his own company, John Delorean worked at Pontiac and regarded his time there as the happiest of his career, so the two companies have a strong historical association.
He also pointed out that if Delorean began selling the Solstice, it would put several hundred people back to work at the former GM plant in Wilmington, Del. Right now, the Delorean Motor Company services, repairs and upgrades existing Delorean cars. The revived Solstice would be the company’s first new car since the 80s, when it famously went bankrupt.
Part of the appeal of the Pontiac Solstice is its great handling, so hopefully the Delorean Solstice won’t have the trademark heavy stainless steel body of the 80s Delorean.
