Small car sales jumped along with gas prices last year, but now it’s looking like some of the buyers who sold their gas guzzlers in favor of compact cars would have been better off keeping their thirsty vehicles. According to Newscheif, a study by AutoPacific shows that many small car buyers are disappointed with the lack of features on their frugal purchase.
“This is buyer’s remorse,” said George Peterson, president of AutoPacific. “What they said in the study is they want a bigger car. They bought a fuel efficient car, but now they’re saying, ‘It does what I want, but it doesn’t have what I want. It doesn’t have the features, the power, the room, and next time I’ll opt for a bigger car.’ ”
According to the poll by AutoPacific, 30% of small car buyers say that their car is underpowered, 25% want more cargo space, 18% wish it was bigger in general, and 25% want more technology.
Small cars are available with plenty of power these days. Just look at the Civic Si and Corolla XRS, both of which have as much power as their larger corporate siblings. Technology packages like navigation or Ford’s Sync system are also available in small cars, so it sounds like the people who bought a small car just because gas was expensive didn’t stop to think about what they really wanted in a car. Even if you’re stepping down in size to save money, you shouldn’t starve yourself of the options you’ll end up wishing you had. Buying a small car with the options you really want will save you a lot of money over replacing it in a year when you get sick of a base model car.
