The Ram has been Dodge’s pickup brand for a long time, and has become synonymous with powerful, feature-packed trucks. Right now, the Ram name is found on all of Dodge’s ½ ton and larger pickup trucks. That could all change soon though. According to Inside Line, the Ram name will likely soon be separated from Dodge and become its own brand.
The Ram nameplate will be found on trucks, vans and some SUVs, leaving the cars and most likely the crossover SUVs to be sold under the Dodge name. The Dodge brand will probably be the recipient of most of the Fiat cars that are brought to America.
Chrysler has been accused in recent years of muddying the focus of its brands. In its last years, all of the Plymouth brand’s vehicles were found elsewhere in Chrysler’s stable under a different name. More recently, the Jeep brand added several car-based crossovers that don’t fit with the legendary Jeep reputation for off-road capability.
This move will give each brand under the Chrysler group definition. Chrysler will move up-market to compete with Cadillac in the luxury market, while Jeep will continue selling off-roaders. Dodge will sell mainstream cars and crossovers, and the Ram brand will cover all the larger trucks, SUVs and people movers.
The Dodge Ram 1500 pickup is probably what you think of when you hear “Ram,” but it could soon become its own brand.
