Chevrolet has confirmed that the newly reborn Camaro will be available with a Z/28 package. The Z/28 Camaro is legendary, and Chevrolet has teased us with the prospect of a Z/28 fifth generation Camaro for years. Finally the speed demons, power-hungry and insane will have an alternative when the Camaro SS just isn’t fast enough.
Ed Welburn, GM’s VP for global design, confirmed the Z/28’s production to Inside Line. Welburn said that the Camaro Z/28’s body was complete, but that completing the powertrain calibration will take about a yer. That would most likely put the Camaro Z/28 in the 2011 model year.
The 2011 Camaro Z/28’s 6.2-liter supercharged engine will be sourced from the Cadillac CTS-V. In the CTS-V, the engine makes 556-horsepower, so expect at least that much in the top-of-the-line Camaro. That should be enough to beat the Mustang Shelby GT500.
If the standard Chevy Camaro isn’t enough power for you, next year the Z/28 will be available with a 550-hp supercharged engine.
