The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has announced its 2009 Top Safety Picks for new cars. The IIHS rates vehicles based on how well they protect passengers in high-speed front and side crashes, as well as how well seat and head restraints protect against neck injuries in rear impacts.

The list features a lot of cars and trucks, which is a good thing if you’re a new car shopper right now. You don’t have to sacrifice safety for diversity anymore.

Popular vehicles segments like midsize cars and SUVs are filled with options that have earned a top safety pick. In some smaller segments though, only a single vehicle earned the pick. The only mini car to earn the IIHS’ top honor is the Honda Fit, and the only small pickup is the Toyota Tacoma.

Some important news if you’re shopping for a minivan for your family: only the Honda Odyssey, Hyundai Entourage and Kia Sedona made the list of top safety picks.
