You probably already know that GM is planning to phase out the Pontiac brand in order to focus on its core brands (Chevrolet, GMC, Buick and Cadillac). The phasing has begun, and the only Pontiac available for the 2010 model year will be the Vibe, according to GM’s 2010 ordering guide. They made a movie about the last of the Mohicans, and I want to be the first to suggest that a movie be made about the last of this tribe too.
The similarities are staggering.
This means that Pontiac will lose the G5, G6, G8, Solstice and Torrent this year. If that news upsets you, you can take solace in the fact that dealers still have excess inventory of all those cars, so you can still take your pick of 2009 models. You most likely will still be able to long into the 2010 model year.
The Vibe is built alongside the Toyota Matrix at a plant operated by both automakers, and it’s a good bet that GM will keep the Vibe on as a Chevrolet after they kill off the Pontiac name. But then again, we’ve said that before about Pontiac cars and been proven wrong, so don’t trust our judgment.
