General Motors has just released the first official photo of its newest micro car, the Spark. The newest addition to the Chevy family the Spark takes its roots from the funky little Beat concept from last year.
You remember the Beat, the Trax, and the Groove from last year’s New York Auto Show. Not many people do. Still, the three little cars where a sort of live survey where they asked showgoers which design they like best. In the end the Beat won and became the Spark after a very small re-style to comply with regular safety features.
All the cars were built using the advantages of General Motors partnership with Korean manufacture Daewoo. Though the Sparks will ultimately be assembled by Daewoo, all the design and R&D work credit goes to GM’s German subsidiary Opel. No word on powertrain specs yet but I doubt we will get the 1.0-liter four cylinder that the Pacific markets get. Instead we’ll probably see a 1.2 or 1.4-liter for the North American market.
The Spark will be available in the fourth quarter of 2011, probably as a 2012 model. While pricing remains a mystery don’t expect it to deviate too far from the outgoing Aveo’s price tag.
