Ah, yes, gasoline. What’s the saying “can’t live with it, can’t live without it”. With the current trend in our economic stance, gas prices have actually hit a three year low this month. This past Wednesday, AAA released a new survey that indicates that the per gallon price of gasoline in the United States has fallen 42 days in a row to a new average of $2.589 for unleaded regular.
On October 18, the price fell under $3 a gallon for the first time in a nine-months. This has been linked to the increased awareness of environmental issues by the average consumer and an overall decline in miles driven a week by those same consumers. Alaska, Hawaii, and California are the three states where consumers are still paying over $3 a gallon. Alaskans pay the most for their fuel at an average of $3.622 a gallon, with the least expensive gasoline in Oklahoma at $2.20 a gallon.
Still, the fear of car companies resting on their laurels because the crunch isn’t as bad is it once was is a frightening thought. I have faith in the fact that this was enough of a stinging slap in the face to people that we don’t ever want to go back to that again. While most companies insist they are still developing alternative means of powering our cars, this might just be a reason for them to try an unload all the gas-guzzlers still left on their lots.
