It has come to light that yet another manufacture is being forced to lay off some of it’s workers. Nissan’s Spain division announced they will be laying off about 1,680 workers from it’s factories. This ultimately will cut production from three shifts a day to two shifts.
Fumiaki Matsumoto, vice president, Nissan Spanish Industrial Operations said in a statement: “This has been a difficult decision for the company, but it is a necessary action to ensure the plant’s future sustainability in 2010 and the years to come.”
The Spanish factory builds the comapany’s Pathfinder and Armada SUV’s as well as the Cabstar and Atleon light trucks for the European market. The company sites a lack of demand for these models as the main culprit for the decision to cut the shifts. SUV sales have all but halted, even in the European nations. If trends continue, Nissan fears there could be even more cuts.
