You’ve already seen the picks now we got the numbers to back up the hot-rod looks. Al Oppenheiser, chief engineer for GM’s North American rear-wheel-drive platform, was on hand at the press unveiling. He was more than happy to let everyone know what his baby could do.
According to Oppenheiser, the new 300hp, 3.6-liter V6-equipped Camaro will run from zero to 60 mph in 6.1 seconds regardless of which transmission is chosen. The V6 coupe will also cover the quarter-mile in 14.5 seconds with an auto and 14.7 seconds with a manual, both at 97 mph. The brakes aren’t as impressive though, with the V6 Camaro needing 132 feet to stop from 60mph.
Chevy’s Camaro SS outfitted with the 422-hp 6.2-liter LS3 V8 six-speed manual hits 60 mph in 4.9 seconds and runs a 13.4-second quarter-mile at 108 mph. That sounds a lot better for a muscle car, though the V6 car’s numbers would have impressed greatly in the 1960’s. Oppenheiser also claims that the automatic-equipped SS Camaro, which is rated at 400 hp, runs even faster. Zero to 60 mph takes just 4.6 seconds and the quarter-mile arrives in 13.3 seconds. When pressed for an answer as to why the auto was so much faster, Oppenheiser said; “We optimized the shift points.” Braking performance is much better on the SS though, taking only 117 feet to stop from 60mph. Thank the new SS-only Brembo calipers for that.
Both also cars have an independent rear suspension. This type of suspension is of a much more sophisticated design and allows for the cars to pull an impressive 0.99 g’s in the slalom test. Though magazines have not yet gotten their mitts on these new muscle cars expect them to soon.
