BMW and Fiat have both announced the intention of producing a new small-car platform to underpin various new models from both brands. The two companies signed a memorandum of understanding to consider “the possibility of cooperation in the areas of architectures and components for their Mini and Alfa Romeo vehicles.”
The new small-car platform that could underpin the next-generation Mini, Alfa Romeo Mi.To and Fiat Grande Punto. Sergio Marchionne, CEO of the Fiat group, stated: “The proposed cooperation with BMW is a significant cornerstone of our strategy of alliances.”
The official released press statement said only that BMW and Fiat “have agreed not to divulge details of the possible collaboration. The results of the cooperation discussions will probably be achieved by the end of the year.”
BMW also agreed to help Fiat relaunch the Alfa Romeo brand in North America. This is a huge chance for Fiat to reestablish itself again in the U.S. market. While the Fiat name might remain in Italy, at least the more storied Alfa Romeo name will make it’s come back with the backing of one of the major players in the luxury car market in this country. The arrangement should spell good news for both parties involved.
