It’s beautifully made and well put together, but the Lexus SC has been a slow seller for Lexus. In the first six months of this year, Lexus sold only 1,230 SC 430s, down more than 40 percent from a year ago.
The 2008 SC 430 is priced at $67,120. It is fitted with a 288-horsepower 4.3-liter V8 that is rated by the EPA at 16 mpg in city driving and 23 on the highway. Not stellar stats considering the hardware, but nonetheless it is a nice car to drive.
Toyota had been developing a successor to the SC, based on the same rear-wheel-drive platform as the upcoming LF-A supercar, which would make it quite a contender. A release date set in early 2009 was pushed back to mid-2011 and now the next SC has been canceled, according to Toyota insiders.
A slow economy and already lackluster sales proved a bit to much for Toyota and they just could not make business sense out of a new SC. With Lexus’s new LF-A slated to debut as their flagship halo car, the SC was just not really wanted by any dealers, and apparently the buying public won’t notice it’s disappearance either. It was a good car, but it’s time is due.
