In the days of ever-rising gas prices and ever more conscious consumers, you would think introducing a new full-size, 7 passenger, V8 SUV as lunacy. But that is exactly what Kia is doing.
Their newest offering is called the Borrego, and it is aimed directly at SUV’s like the Ford Explorer. This is a traditional body-on-frame design that’s meant to take all the abuse a normal suburban family can dish out. It can tow up to 7500 pounds and seat seven passengers. What’s more, it comes with an available 337hp V8 engine and dual-mode 4×4 system. The base model of the Kia Borrego comes with a 3.8-liter V6 that makes 276 hp but it’s affects on mileage are negligible since it still has to haul 2 tons of SUV around.
This is a serious SUV. One that actually stacks up, and sometimes betters, it’s competition in the market. The 2009 Kia Borrego LX V6 will start around $26,000 and a loaded EX V8 4WD model with a navigation system and back-up camera will top out around $40,000. The pricing is right in line with it’s competitors. Whether it’s too much too late is still to be seen but one thing is for sure, Kia is going to have to market this car very carefully in order to attract buyers in this day and age.
