When BMW’s current 7-Series came out it caused quite a stir. It was a radical departure from the old model, which by it’s own right was conservative at best. People did not know what to think about it’s unusual design, but eventually it was accepted and later copied.
But even BMW knows they went a bit to left field. Thats why the new upcoming 7-Series replacement will be a bit toned down compared to the current model. We can see softer shapes and more restrained execution, even when the car is camouflaged.
Engine choices will be the usual V8 and V12 options. This time though, the V8 will be the same twin-turbo unit found on the new X6. The motor puts out 400 ponies and 450 ft.lbs of torque and should ensure that even the base engine is a real performer. The new V12’s specs are yet to be seen, but one can expect a lot of new technology and power figures in the neighborhood of 500hp. BMW will also probably equip all models with it’s new 8-speed automatic transmission.
Expect the car to debut at one of the fall auto shows, probably Paris. Official photos and specs should hit the web around summer time giving enough time to build some momentum for the new model. The new 7-Series should be on dealer showrooms in the spring of 2009.
