Ford Motor Co. recently announced it was going to be investing about $500 million dollars in India. Ford’s Indian devision, called Ford India, will be using the money to build a new engine manufacturing plant and to double it’s car assembly production by 2010.
Company executives disclosed the investment plans at the Indian launch of the new Fiesta 1.6S. Ford officials said the new engine plant will be built next to an existing plant outside Chennai, in Maraimalai Nagar and that it will assemble both gas and diesel engines. The new plant will give Ford the capacity to produce 250,000 engines a year by 2010.
The new vehicle assembly plant will head production of a new small car in 2010. It’s reportedly a different version of the new Fiesta, and it will also be built in Europe, China, Mexico and other markets. With this new vehicle in the mix, Ford expects to expand total production capacity in India to 200,000 vehicles a year by 2010.
