Hot on the heels of the latest gas sipping trends, Volkswagen has recently announced that it is introducing a new hybrid version of the golf that they hope to put on the mass market by 2010. The new technology is dubbed TwinDrive.
VW is combining electric motors, hybrid drive systems and lithium-ion battery packs to its TDI and gasoline engines for an ultra-efficient power unit. The Golf TwinDrive prototypes deliver a combined 174 horsepower with both power sources. They can run up to 30 miles on pure electric power. On top of all this, they return more than 90 mpg!
This is a great new effort from an innovative manufacture. Combining this with the already super-fuel effiecient TDI turbo diesel engines, the possibility for an immense fuel savings is really apparent. A car you can buy of the showroom floor that gets 100mpg isn’t as far off as you’d think.
VW recently introduced the Golf TwinDrive at a forum sponsored by the German Ministry for the Environment. It is developing plug-in hybrid vehicles as part of an alliance of German companies working on the future of mobility and the efficient use of renewable energy sources in transportation. They hope their research can later benefit all parts of the world.
I think it’s really great that VW is so vigorously exploring alternative fuel options for their future models. First the hydrogen Tiguan, now this! I can’t wait until I’m driving a 100mpg car.
