We’re all aware that right now, SUV and truck sales have taken a nosedive and hybrids and smaller, compact cars are flying off dealers’ lots.
Here’s the surprising thing though. The Wall Street Journal has found a few vehicles that are selling surprisingly well, despite $4-a-gallon gas prices.
The biggest shocker is that the Lexus LX, a massive SUV that gets 14 mpg, has seen sales more than double in the first five months this year. It makes sense that if you can afford the $80,000+ price tag for this SUV, you can afford the gas to fill the tank.
Other vehicles that are selling include the Toyota Sequoia SUV and the 10-cylinder Dodge Viper sports car. The Sequoia’s sales increased 29% in May from a year earlier, making it the only large utility vehicle that has seen sales grow this year. The Viper’s sales have more than doubled to 515 units.
The Toyota Tundra pickup truck, Daimler AG’s Mercedes-Benz M-Class luxury SUV, Ford Edge crossover, Mazda CX-9 crossover, GMC Acadia crossover, Mazda5, Kia Rondo and Toyota Matrix are all seeing an increase in sales as well, reports the Wall Street Journal.
