Europeans have long known the advantages of a modern diesel engine. Torque-laden and economical, the make for perfect city car engines. Of all the European manufactures Volkswagen has been the one that has alway truly brought this technology to the masses.
Well after a few years absence, VW’s TDI engines are back, only this time they boast some impressive new hardware. Called Blue TDI, this new version will debut here in the states aboard the 2009 Jetta sedan and wagon. VW said the new Blue TDI for North America is based on the next-generation TDI engine that was introduced last year in Europe on the new Tiguan. For the U.S., the engine receives a NOx trap, as well as internal modifications to help reduce emissions even further. Also, the system in the Jetta meets the tough new Bin5/Tier2 emissions standards imposed by California and four other states, while achieving up to 60 mpg in highway fuel economy.
The ’09 Jetta TDI features a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder common-rail diesel rated at 138 horsepower and 236 pound-feet of torque. This is a substantial power hike as the last diesels to be sold here made only 90hp and 178 torque. VW is boasting almost 65 miles-per-gallon on the highway! Impressive indeed…
Expect the new model to be in dealer showrooms in the summer of 2009.
