Audi recently announced that it was releasing a version of parent company Volkswagen’s new 7-Speed dual-clutch gearbox. Known as DSG, but referred to as S-Tronic in Audi speak, the new gearbox is slated to be equipped in 90% of Audi’s new models.
One of the biggest issues with the first generation dual-clutch gearboxes was the inability for the transmission to stand up to high torque numbers. 250 Ft-lbs of torque was about the limit for acceptable reliability. Not so with the newest 7-speed version. The new gearbox can hold up to 405 Ft-lbs of torque which makes it perfect for most of the company’s four to eight cylinder engines.
The only models so far that can’t deal with that are Audi’s new Q7 TDI (Almost 700 Ft-lbs!!) and the super car R8, which will still use the Lamborghini-derived R-Tronic gearbox. Look for it to debut on late 2009 and all 2010 models.
Above: What’s next, a 10-speed? Actually, yeah…..
