When you think of a vehicle that goes from 0-60 in 5.5 seconds and makes 500HP does a two ton SUV come to mind? We didn’t think so but Audi is now set to change all that. The Geneva Auto Show is the new platform for the unveiling of the companies new V12 turbo-diesel Q7 SUV.
The new Audi Q7 TDI, as it will be called, is the first in it’s class here in the states. It’s massive twin-turbo V12 engine generates a massive 500HP and almost 700Ft-Lbs of stump-pulling torque. The Q7 TDI’s engine is closely related to the 650-hp version in the R10 TDI that led Audi to victory in the 24 Hours of Le Mans.
In the Q7 it’s also capable of roughly 20mpg in the city on average. Not bad for a vehicle weighing in at way over 4,000 pounds. The fact that it’s faster to 60 than a Porsche Boxster only drives the point further home. Audi describes the engine’s output as “sheer inexhaustible power.”
Through all this though they have not forgotten the Q7 is an SUV. Audi fits a sporty adaptive air suspension system, aluminum wishbones and axles and 8 inches of ground clearance to all Q7 TDI’s. Obviously, Audi’s famed Quattro drive system distributes power to the front and back in a 40:60 ratio for “maximum agility and driving enjoyment.” according to the automaker.
Audi has yet to announce whether or not the car will come to the U.S. market, but sources inside the company say that Audi wants to bring it here. The weakness of the dollar versus the euro might be the biggest factor. It has kept Volkswagen’s new Scirocco from coming to the states. Let’s just hope this one makes it over as it’s in a class who’s customers are nowhere as picky about price.
