The Geneva Auto Show will mark an important date for Subaru. The Japanese manufacture is introducing the world’s first boxer-type diesel engine. The new diesel motors will go into 2008 Outback wagon and Legacy sedans. Subaru has not yet decided whether it will import them to the U.S. market.
Subaru isn’t releasing any specific details yet. All we know is that the new turbo-diesel is a 2.0-liter horizontally opposed four-cylinder, with relatively low CO2 emissions and combined fuel economy of around 40 mpg. Subaru says the new boxer turbo-diesel is designed to work specifically with the company’s asymmetrically all-wheel drive system.
This is exciting news as the power delivery and inherit design of a boxer engine is ideal for a turbo-diesel application. It’s a surprise it has not been done sooner. Look for the official specs and details to be revealed at Geneva in a couple of weeks.
