Subaru Vs. Mitsubishi. Like the greatest rivalries of our times, the Subaru Impreza and Mitsubishi Lancer sedans have long been duking it out. You see these rather plane jane sedans came both equipped in special editon models boasting rally insprired performance tweaks and performance.
Subaru has the WRX version of it’s Impreza, and Mitsubishi has the venerable Evolution version of it’s Lancer sedan. Both pack 2.0-2.5 liter four cylinder engines which are turbocharged for even better performance. Both are also equipped with sophisticated All-Wheel Drive systems that help get all that power down. Were dealing with almost 300 horses stock here people.
The only difference was the approach when it came to models. While Subaru gave us the mild WRX(237hp) and the wild WRX STi(300hp) along with the regular Impreza, Mitsubishi sold either the regular Lancer (non-turbo, non-awd, slow, boring) or the balls to the walls Evolution with 296hp.
Well now Mitsubishi has bridged the gap. Starting with the 2009 model year Mitsubishi will offer the Lancer RalliArt. Sporting a de-tuned Evolution engine, the RalliArt brings the fight to the WRX with 237hp and an AWD straight from the Evolution model.
It should be out early 2009. Let’s get ready to rumble!!!
Above: This is the sportback concept. The production car should follow suit but the Europeans shoud see the hatchback while we’ll probably see a sedan.
