Hyundai has long shed itself of it’s economy car image of recent years. Cars like the Tiburon and the Azzera have started to push perception of the brand skyward. People no longer hold Hyundai in the same vain as a Daewoo.
Well now rumors are flying that Hyundai is working on a plug-in hybrid that can be charged at home in a regular electrical outlet. Though Hyundai states in it does not even have a development program in place the rumors still persist.
Korean media are creating conflicting accounts of the automaker’s plans to develop a plug-in gasoline/electric model. One report quoted an unnamed Hyundai official as saying the company is still “studying the idea” but sources are quite sketchy at the moment.
What is official is that Hyundai has said it plans to begin mass production of hybrid vehicles in 2009, beginning with a gas/electric version of the Accent small car.
Even if they are not Toyota or Honda they can play too in hybrid development. One thing is for sure, with the amount that they have accomplished in so little time, I wouldn’t count them out.
