After 32 years U.S. Congress has just approved a bill that will increase fuel economy standards across the board for passenger vehicles. The bill will apply to any car, light truck, or SUV sold in the United States.
The energy bill demands a 40 per cent improvement in fuel economy for all vehicles. It has stirred a lot of uproar from the auto manufactures who say it’s going to be impossible and expensive to achieve this goal.
The bill also requires a six-fold increase in ethanol use by 2022. This combination is done on purpose to curb our dependence on those evil foreign oils.
All the legislation needs now is the presidents approval. It is said to be scheduled to go to the white house this week. President Bush has indicated that he will sign it.
Let’s hope so, cause as much the auto makers are gonna whine, we need this badly. This is a great first step towards a greener future. I for one, will be keeping track of this and what it will translate to on the streets.
