The U.S. Goverment wants to protect your head. They want new passenger vehicles to provide head protection in dangerous side-impact crashes, which kill thousands of motorists every year and leave others with serious brain injuries.
They are giving automakers until September 2012 to make head protection systems standard on all passenger vehicles. A review has been on-going since 2004 and the research shows over 300 lives could be saved a year.
These systems are designed to work specifically in the event of a side impact. Also known as a “T-Bone”, a side impact accident causes more deaths a year than any other. On top of that thousands are left with permanent and life changing brain injury as a result. Side-impact crashes killed 9,200 people and injured 650,000 in 2005, the most recent figures available.
This is good news for everybody as there can never be to much safety as far as I am concerned. I’ve personally talked to people who have been “T-Boned” and all say it is way worse than a frontal impact.
It seems obvious to do it, especially since it would increase the price of cars acroos the board to a mere $33 bucks. Most manufactures have agreed unanimously to implament and meet the deadline.
The result of a T-Bone style accident. Not pretty….
