I ran into a posting about the top reliable cars to buy on cars.com. While this data is from back in 2004 as the last available they had, I found it interesting to see the Buick Century listed. Not he car I would expect, of course what wasn’t surprising is how few american brands were listed. Buick even made the list of dependable manufacturers, another surprise. Chevrolet and Ford at least showed up in one category each. Of course the compact car most reliable is still the Honda Civic, when Honda makes an engine they really make an engine.
So if what should matter most is reliability, and the value we get for each buck should determine our prucahses, why can’t Buick sell a lot of cars? Looking at the list you see lots of cars that are not big sellers. The reason, we Americans are more about style than anything else. What a car looks like is more important as we feel it shows the world someting about us, and makes us maybe feel a little better inside. Just think of all the money we could have in this country if we bought based on this reliability list, then we could spend more on other vanity items like plastic surgery and high end TV’s.
